As I was walking through the market, I asked around to see if there was anything gluten free there. A few employees told me about a bakery toward the back of the market. I immediately headed that way and found Flying Monkey Bakery. They sell flourless chocolate cake, cookies, and macaroons. While the sign only advertised 'flourless', I talked with one of the employees and he confirmed that they are in fact gluten free.
I opted to try the macaroon and chocolate cake.
In my opinion, Flying Monkey Bakery is a little overpriced for the size and quality of the product, but when options are limited, you go with what you can find. Thankfully, the guy gave me a discount. Holla. Both desserts were good but I definitely preferred the chocolate cake!
There is also a PA General Store in the market that has lots of touristy items, but if you look hard enough, you'll find some gluten free treats hidden in the back. Keep your eyes peeled at all times, you never know what you'll find.
As I said before, I'm sure there are more gluten free options at Reading Market but this is just what I stumbled upon during my last trip. Next time I'm there, I'll let you know if I find anything else. And as always, if you've been to Philly and know of any gluten free places to eat, let me know! I would love to try them next time I'm in the area!
Brianna - the Amish bakery at RTM has GF options as well. Be sure to check out my Gluten Free Philly blog before your next visit.

Thanks for the tip Michael! I will definitely check out your blog next time I'm in Philly! :)
DeleteDid you find anything other than sweets at the Reading Terminal Market? I'm going to be there for a conference and i'm going to need some real food before my afternoon coffee and snack...
ReplyDeleteAre you looking for something that's gluten free? If so, that's a little harder to find from what I could tell. I'll actually be back there in a week or so and plan to look around for a gluten free meal! But definitely go and check it out...I'm sure you could find something there that's gluten free. If you're not worried about gluten then you're in luck! There are soo many options...get a Philly cheesesteak :) Or, there is a sandwich place there that won an award for the best sandwich in the country! I can't remember the name of it but ask anyone that works there and they'll be able to point you in the right direction. Have a great time!
Deleteoh yea - definitely looking for gluten free! thanks for the direction - knowing that i should be able to find something is great! thanks much!
DeleteI was just there. Hershey's sandwich shop near the center offers gf bread for the sandwiches and they were knowledgable on their house made products like pastrami. It does get very busy after 11 am so there are lines and a rush.
ReplyDeleteOk Herschel's sandwich shop didn't have gluten-free bread for sandwiches today but I got a great toasted gluten-free wrap (and fries) from Molly Malone's - chargrilled chicken, lettuce and tomato with extra bacon and guacamole. It hit the spot :-)
